Plainfield East (6-2, 4-2) and coach Mike Romeli celebrated the first football playoff appearance for the Bengals in the program’s five-year history. Plainfield East scored a touchdown in all three phases, highlighted by the Bengals defense scoring twice and Brandon Rivera’s 70-yard punt return for a touchdown. Plainfield East led 36-7 at the half.

Plainfield East scored 14 points in a 16-second span. Leading 7-0, East quarterback Cole Kotopka (8-of-16, 277 yards, 3 TDs) connected with wideout Jeremy Dutton on a 71-yard touchdown to extend the Bengals lead to 14-0 with 9:43 left in the first half. Central fumbled on the next play and Bengals linebacker William Moore returned it 35 yards for a touchdown and a 21-0 lead.

In addition to the Plainfield East defense that scored twice on Central turnovers, wideout Shederick Majors had four catches for 196 yards and two TDs.

Plainfield Central (0-8, 0-6) outgained East in total offense 398-299, however, most of the Wildcats’ yards came in the second half with the game mostly decided. Central senior running back Dominic Rios-Sterr led the Wildcats with 190 all-purpose yards (120 rushing and 70 receiving) and a TD.

“It’s very exciting for us and it’s been a great year for us. We deserve this after some tough years and after a tough start with starting a program.” — Romeli
